The shape and orientation of the house were dictated by the site. The architects designed a house with the ground floor covered in stone and with a white box floating above this level. The box contains the bedrooms and was strategically placed on top so that it could offer panoramic views of the Santa Monica Canyon. On one end of the residence is the living room. It’s a spacious volume with glass walls that also divided the outdoor space into two courts. One is the informal front court where the children can safely play and that’s adjacent to the family area while the other is the formal rear court that includes an outdoor dining area, a barbeque are and an infinity-edge pool.
The bathroom color scheme is really pleasant as well. In addition, there’s a really beautiful blend of textures here. The marble counter, the stone floor tiles and the smooth and minimalist white fixtures are all in perfect harmony.
The structure occupies an area of 159 square meters and serves a double function: that of a studio and that of a home. These two functions occupy different sections of the building and in between them stands a transit porch. The exterior walls are covered with carbonized wooden planks and their dark color contrasts with the natural hue of the wood that lines the porch walls and the stairs that lead up to it.
The bulky fieldstone fireplace has been replaced with a sleek one clad in a textural tile from Porcelanosa and panels of dark macassar wood; the existing copper chimney has been partially wrapped in macassar to unify the look. The wall that held the giant TV and a messy, inefficient cupboard now contains only a flat-screen TV and a streamlined macassar cabinet. Spare, contemporary sofas by Italian manufacturer Incanto keep the room airy, and mechanized Lutron shades control light and impart privacy.
