We should mention the fact that the structure was built on a gentle slope and while the floor level remains constant throughout, the roof follows the slope and runs parallel to it, reinforcing the strong relationship between the house and its surroundings. As far as the proportions are concerned, the entire structure measures 30m x 5.5m, proportions predetermined by the local flora and fauna.
While it seems safe to assume that the design of U.S. homes will undergo fairly significant changes over the coming decade, it’s equally likely that these changes will be determined by fundamental economic and demographic developments instead of Jetsons-style technological innovations. The aging of our population, the continued recovery from last decade’s housing collapse, and a painfully slow economic recovery that is making it difficult for younger households to get ahead in the housing market are all factors that will shape the future of home design.
The heritage facade and the formal garden areas maintain the aspect of the residence in sink with the surroundings. But the house slowly opens to reveal a more modern and playful side which culminates with the curvaceous rear addition.
The architects managed to make those wishes come true by opening up the interior towards the outdoor areas. Both levels benefit from great indoor-outdoor connections, whether it’s through floor-to-ceiling glass walls or transitional spaces. The living and dining room area is somewhere at the limit between inside and out. It’s a modern approach and the result is a nice mix. Since it was impossible to use the same strategy for the upper level, the architects managed to adopt another approach for this space.
